How many sessions will I need?

If you have an upcoming speaking engagement or a performance that you are particularly anxious about then it is possible to get you feeling much more relaxed and confident about it in just one session.  This will involve us doing some breathing exercises, visualisations and listening meditations to reduce any anxiety instantly.  This is of course not a long term solution and in order to feel confident about speaking and performing in public in general I recommend approximately 5-6 sessions.

How long does each session last?

Each session lasts for 1 hour and a half however sessions lasting an hour can be arranged if required.

What techniques do you use?

I use a combination of breathing exercises, visualisations and Cognitive Behavioural Coaching.  The combination of all these methods will show you not only how to feel instantly calmer in any performing situation, but will also get to the root of your fear and challenge your incorrect thinking and negative inner voice which is the cause of it.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Our ‘cognitive processes’ are our thoughts which include our ideas, mental images, beliefs and attitudes. Cognitive therapy is based on the principle that certain ways of thinking can trigger, or ‘fuel’, certain negative emotions problems. For example, anxiety, depression, phobias, etc, but there are others including physical problems.  A cognitive behavioural Therapist or Coach helps you to understand your current thought patterns. In particular, to identify any harmful, unhelpful, and ‘false’ ideas or thoughts which you have that can trigger your health problem, or make it worse. The aim is then to change your ways of thinking to avoid these ideas. Also, to help your thought patterns to be more realistic and helpful.

Will I be instantly cured of my stage fright after coaching?

I do not talk of stage fright or public speaking anxiety in terms of ‘instant cures’,  as the reality is,  you will gradually become more confident after coaching sessions and become able to enjoy the sensations that accompany speaking or performing in public.   Some therapists will suggest after a 2 hour hypnotherapy session you will be completely free of any performance anxiety and thus cured, this however has never been my experience or that of any of my clients.  Stage fright or a fear of public speaking in my view comes from a lack of inner confidence related to showing or expressing yourself in public.  Therefore it can take some time for your faulty thinking, or inner critical voice to be corrected and changed.  You did not develop this faulty thinking overnight, so it is unlikely you will change it in an instant. Instead over time as you challenge your incorrect thinking you will find yourself becoming less anxious and fearful about speaking or performing in public and with time will become completely free over the overwhelmingly negative feelings associated with public performances.

But aren’t a little nerves before a performance a good thing.

Absolutely! Having nervous excitement or anticipation before a performance or speech is most definitely a good thing, and can make your performance even better. However those who suffer from stage fright or public speaking fear, do not simply feel slight nervousness, they often feel sheer dread and terror at the thought of having to perform or publicly speak and this fear is often accompanied by a myriad of negative physical symptoms such as rapid heart beat, shortness of breath and a racing mind. This is what we address in our coaching sessions.
